The spring Takayama Festival is the annual festival of Hie Shrine, held every April 14–15 (a Wednesday and Thursday in 2027). Ornate festival floats are displayed in the old town south of the Miyagawa River, and the floats with karakuri puppets usually perform around 10:00 and 14:00. On the evening of the 14th a night festival usually runs from about 18:00, with lantern-lit floats moving through town; the 2027 details are still to be announced.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Stroll the old town early in the morning on the 14th or 15th, when the floats are being set out and the day-trippers have not yet arrived.
- Since 2027 falls midweek, the 15th (Thursday) daytime is a good bet for a calmer look at the floats.
- For the night festival, watch from a side lane in the old town rather than the busiest spots near Nakabashi Bridge.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.5× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Takayama has limited accommodation — book months ahead or stay elsewhere along the JR Takayama Line.
- In rain the floats are usually kept in their storehouses and the program can change, so check updates on the day.
- Mid-April evenings in the Hida mountains are cold; bring a warm layer for the night festival.
