Nagasaki Kunchi is the autumn festival of Suwa Shrine, held over three days: Mae-bi (Oct 7), Naka-bi (Oct 8) and Ato-bi (Oct 9). This year’s six odori-cho (performing neighborhoods) present their dedicated dances, opening at Suwa Shrine at 7:00 on Oct 7. Between shows, the teams tour the city performing in front of homes and businesses, a custom called niwasaki-mawari.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Catch the niwasaki-mawari street performances around the city center instead of squeezing into Suwa Shrine — you see the same teams up close without a ticket
- Naka-bi (Oct 8) and Ato-bi (Oct 9) are usually easier than the opening morning of Oct 7, when the first shows start at 7:00
- Try the Otabisho venue as an alternative to the main stage at Suwa Shrine, especially for the later shows of the day
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.2× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Paid seats at Suwa Shrine and the Otabisho are limited — book early if you want a guaranteed view of the dedicated dances
- Rain can shift the performance schedule, so check the official site the night before and on the morning of each day
- Suwa Shrine sits at the top of long stone steps; take the Nagasaki tram to the Suwa-jinja stop and wear comfortable shoes
