The autumn edition of the Takayama Festival belongs to Sakurayama Hachimangu and fills the old town with ornate festival floats. On the evening of Oct 9 (18:00–21:30) the lantern-lit floats roll through the streets in the night parade, and karakuri puppet shows run on Oct 9 at 12:00 and 14:00 and on Oct 10 at 11:00 and 13:00. One float is under repair in 2026, so ten floats are on display.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- The last karakuri show (Oct 10 at 13:00) tends to be easier to see than the first show on Oct 9, when day-trippers pour in
- For the night parade, pick a spot along the old-town streets away from the Sakurayama Hachimangu approach and settle in before 18:00
- Visit the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall next to the shrine, which displays real festival floats year-round, at a quieter time outside the parade hours
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.5× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Events are cancelled in bad weather with no postponement — check the official site on the day before travelling in
- Accommodation in Takayama fills up fast for festival dates; book well ahead or stay along the JR Takayama Line
- October evenings in the Hida mountains get cold, so bring a warm layer for the night parade
