The “fighting festival” of Matsubara Hachiman Shrine in Himeji is held every year on Oct 14 (the eve, yoimiya) and Oct 15 (the main day). Its signature moment is the clash of three mikoshi portable shrines, smashed together by their bearers, while yatai floats from the surrounding villages join in. The main clashes take place on the afternoon of Oct 15 at the Otabisho, where the hillside slopes serve as natural stands.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- The eve on Oct 14 (yoimiya) at Matsubara Hachiman Shrine is noticeably calmer than the main day while still showing off the yatai floats
- On the morning of Oct 15, watch the yatai make their way through the village streets near Shirahama-no-miya Station before the crowds move to the Otabisho
- At the Otabisho, stay toward the upper edge or sides of the hillside rather than the packed front rows — you still see the clashes and can leave easily
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.8× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- The nearest station is Shirahama-no-miya on the Sanyo Electric Railway; it gets very crowded on Oct 15, so arrive early and allow extra time to get home
- The hillside is steep and densely packed — wear sturdy shoes, keep children close and follow police and staff instructions
- Bring water, a hat and some cash; you may spend hours outdoors on the slope with limited facilities
