The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is usually held on the last Saturday of July (the 2026 edition was on July 25); the 2027 date has not been announced. Fireworks are launched from two areas — venue 1 between Sakurabashi and Kototoibashi bridges and venue 2 between Komagatabashi and Umayabashi bridges — with around 20,000 shells in recent years. Close to a million spectators pack the riverside streets around Asakusa.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Watch from a distance, such as higher ground or a riverside stretch well away from the two launch areas — the large shells are visible from far off.
- Book a restaurant or hotel room with a river view to enjoy the show from indoors, away from the street crush.
- Arrive in the area early in the afternoon and stay put until well after the finale, rather than moving at the start and end when crowds peak.
Crowd impact
Expect around 3.0× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Asakusa Station usually has entry restrictions after the show; walking to a station a little farther away can be faster.
- Roads near the river close to traffic in the evening — check the official site for the 2027 date, times and closures.
- It is hot and humid even after dark: bring water, a fan and something to sit on, and use toilets early.
