The Sendai Tanabata Festival is held every year on August 6–8. Huge, colourful paper streamers called fukinagashi hang over the shopping arcades around Ichibancho and Chuo-dori, turning the city centre into a tunnel of decorations. A fireworks show is usually held on the eve, August 5.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Walk the Ichibancho and Chuo-dori arcades early in the morning before the shops open — the decorations are up and the streets are calm.
- August 6 falls on a Friday in 2027, so the first day is generally less crowded than the weekend of the 7th–8th.
- Explore the side arcades and smaller shopping streets branching off the main route, where decorations continue with fewer people.
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.9× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- The main decorations hang in covered arcades, so the festival is still enjoyable on a rainy day.
- The arcades are a short walk from Sendai Station; hotels fill up early for the festival dates.
- Check the official site for the eve fireworks details, as the time and venue are announced each year.
