Sanja Matsuri is the festival of Asakusa Shrine, usually held Friday to Sunday around the third Saturday of May. On Saturday around 100 neighbourhood mikoshi portable shrines are carried through Asakusa, and early on Sunday morning the shrine’s three main mikoshi set out (miyadashi) and tour the neighbourhoods all day. Crowds around Senso-ji and Kaminarimon can be extreme.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Friday is the calmest day: the opening procession through Asakusa in the afternoon draws far fewer people than the weekend.
- On Saturday, watch neighbourhood mikoshi in the back streets away from Nakamise and Kaminarimon, where each district carries its own shrine.
- On Sunday afternoon, catch the main mikoshi as they pass through the outer neighbourhoods instead of the packed miyadashi at the shrine.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.6× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Dates follow the usual pattern but are not yet announced for 2027 — confirm on Asakusa Shrine’s official site.
- Give mikoshi bearers plenty of room and follow staff instructions; the shrines sway unpredictably in narrow streets.
- Asakusa Station exits get congested, so consider walking from Tawaramachi or Asakusabashi, and use toilets before the crowds build.
