The Kishiwada Danjiri Festival is a September festival in which heavy wooden danjiri floats are pulled at speed through the streets and swung around corners in a manoeuvre called yarimawashi. In 2026 it ran over an eve day (from 6:00 to 22:00) and a main day (from 9:00 to 22:00); 2027 is expected on September 18–19, the weekend before Respect for the Aged Day, but has not been announced. In the evening the danjiri are hung with lanterns and pulled at a slower pace.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Come in the evening, when the danjiri are lit with lanterns and pulled slowly — a calmer, atmospheric way to see them.
- Book a paid seat at the Kankan-ba corner to watch the yarimawashi safely without jostling for space.
- The early morning of the eve day, when the floats first set out, is quieter than midday, when day-trippers arrive.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.2× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- The fast-moving floats are genuinely dangerous: stay behind barriers, never stand on the outside of a corner, and follow marshals’ instructions.
- Nankai Kishiwada Station is the main access point and gets very busy — allow extra time, especially in the evening.
- The 2027 dates are not yet confirmed; check Kishiwada City’s official page before you travel.
