Karatsu Kunchi is the autumn festival of Karatsu Shrine, starring 14 hikiyama — giant lacquered floats shaped like a red lion, a sea bream, samurai helmets and more. It opens with the lantern-lit Yoi-yama night parade on the evening of Nov 2; the highlight comes on Nov 3, when the floats are hauled into the sandy grounds of the Nishi-no-hama Otabisho, and Nov 4 brings a procession through town. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- The town procession on Nov 4 is a working day for many and is generally calmer than the Nov 3 holiday, when the Otabisho hauling draws the biggest crowds
- For the Nov 2 Yoi-yama, watch the lanterns from a street further along the route rather than right outside Karatsu Shrine, where the parade starts
- Visit the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall (曳山展示場) on another day to see the floats up close without any crowd
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.0× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Nov 3 is a national holiday (Culture Day) in Japan, so hotels in Karatsu fill early — book ahead or stay in Fukuoka and come by train
- The Otabisho grounds are sandy; wear shoes you can walk in comfortably and don’t mind getting dirty
- Keep clear of the hikiyama and their pulling ropes, especially when the floats speed up or turn
