Kanda Matsuri is the festival of Kanda Myojin shrine; its full main-year edition, with the Shinkosai procession, is held every two years, and since 2026 was an off year, 2027 is expected to be a main year. It is usually held around a weekend in mid-May. If the usual pattern holds, the Shinkosai procession would travel all day on Saturday through Kanda, Nihonbashi, Otemachi, Marunouchi and Akihabara, and neighbourhood mikoshi would be carried into the shrine on Sunday — dates are expected, not yet announced.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Catch the Shinkosai procession along its route in the business districts of Otemachi or Nihonbashi rather than in Akihabara, where crowds gather.
- On Sunday, follow a neighbourhood mikoshi through the side streets of Kanda before it reaches the packed shrine grounds.
- Visit Kanda Myojin on a weekday in the days around the festival to see the decorated precincts without the weekend rush.
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.8× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Confirm the 2027 dates and procession timetable on the official site before planning — they are announced closer to the festival.
- Kanda Myojin is a short walk from Ochanomizu Station or Suehirocho Station.
- The procession runs all day and its timing at each point varies, so build slack into your plans and carry water.
