Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)
- When
- Where
- Kyoto
Jidai Matsuri is Heian Shrine’s festival, held every Oct 22 (postponed if it rains). About 2,000 people in costume recreate the eras of Kyoto history in order, from the Meiji period back to the Heian period. The procession leaves the Kyoto Imperial Palace at 12:00 and arrives at Heian Shrine in the afternoon via Karasuma-dori, Oike-dori, Kawaramachi, Sanjo and Jingu-michi.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Oike-dori is one of Kyoto’s widest avenues, so there is usually more room to stand than near the start at the Imperial Palace
- Watch the later stretch on Jingu-michi near Heian Shrine in mid-afternoon, after the lunchtime crowds at the start have thinned
- If you want a guaranteed view without jostling, book a paid seat at the palace, on Oike-dori or at Heian Shrine
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.8× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- The festival is postponed if it rains, so check the official information on the morning of Oct 22
- City buses along the route are slow and crowded during the procession; the subway (Karasuma and Tozai lines) is the easier way to move around
- The procession takes a long time to pass, so use a toilet and grab food before you claim your spot
