Hakata Gion Yamakasa is the festival of Kushida Shrine, held July 1–15. From July 1, tall decorative floats (kazari-yamakasa) are displayed at sites around Fukuoka. The climax, Oiyama, starts before 5 a.m. on July 15, when teams race on foot carrying heavy floats through the streets of Hakata.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Tour the decorative kazari-yamakasa on display around the city from July 1 — easy to see at your own pace on any day.
- Watch the Oiyama-narashi practice run on the afternoon of July 12 for the racing spectacle with fewer spectators than the 15th.
- The Shudan-yamamise on July 13, when the floats are carried into the Tenjin area, is another calmer alternative.
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.8× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Trains don’t run before the 5 a.m. Oiyama start, so stay within walking distance of Hakata or Nakasu on the night of the 14th.
- Spectators near the route may be splashed by the water thrown on the runners — wear clothes that can get wet.
- July in Fukuoka is hot and humid, and it can still be the rainy season — bring water and a compact umbrella.
