Gion Matsuri, the festival of Yasaka Shrine, fills the whole month of July in Kyoto. The highlights are the Yamaboko Junko float processions on July 17 (the first and larger) and July 24 (the second, with fewer floats plus the Hanagasa procession), both Saturdays in 2027 and usually starting at 9:00. On the yoiyama evenings of July 14–16 and 21–23 the floats are displayed around Shijo-Karasuma, and the night of July 16 is the busiest, with streets closed to traffic.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- July 10–13: watch the floats being assembled (hoko-tate) and the trial pulls (hikizome) — real festival atmosphere with modest crowds.
- View the displayed floats around Shijo-Karasuma early in the morning during the yoiyama period, before the evening crowds.
- The second procession on July 24 is usually less crowded than July 17, and it also brings the Hanagasa parade.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.4× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Kyoto in July is extremely hot and humid — carry water, a hat and a towel, and take breaks in air-conditioned shops.
- Paid seats for the processions are sold in advance and are the easiest way to see the floats turn corners (tsujimawashi).
- On yoiyama nights some subway exits and streets have one-way restrictions; Karasuma and Shijo stations get very congested.
