Eikando Autumn Night Illumination

- Kyoto
Eikando (Zenrin-ji), known as “Momiji no Eikando” for its maples, opens for autumn night viewing with entry from 17:30 to 20:30 and gates closing at 21:00 (an admission fee is charged). The illuminated maples reflected in the temple pond are the star, and the temple is also famous for its Mikaeri Amida, the Buddha who looks back over his shoulder. In the daytime, a special exhibition of temple treasures runs from Nov 11 to Dec 6.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- Go on a weekday rather than a weekend, and consider early December, when the late-November peak crowds have passed
- Arrive toward the end of the entry window (closer to 20:30) instead of queuing for the 17:30 opening
- See the maples by day during the treasure exhibition, combined with a morning walk along the Philosopher’s Path or a visit to nearby Nanzen-ji
Crowd impact
Expect around 1.7× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Night viewing has a separate admission fee from daytime visits; check the official site for current details
- Take the city bus to the Nanzenji-Eikando-michi stop or walk from Keage Station on the Tozai subway line, as roads in the area get congested
- Peak colors usually arrive in late November, and evenings are chilly — bring a warm layer for walking the garden
