Awa Odori is Tokushima’s famous summer dance festival. August 11 is a one-day special stage event, and the main days are August 12–15, when dance groups called ren perform each evening on paid stages (enbujo) and through free streets across the city. The festival is known for its chant that “fools who dance and fools who watch” might as well dance.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- A reserved seat at one of the paid enbujo stages gives you a clear view of the ren without standing in the street crush.
- The August 11 special stage event is a good way to see top groups before the main four days bring the biggest crowds.
- At Awa Odori Kaikan near Mt. Bizan, you can watch Awa Odori performances year-round — ideal if you visit outside the festival peak.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.4× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Tokushima hotels sell out early — many visitors stay in Osaka or Kobe and come by highway bus, or stay in nearby cities such as Naruto.
- Visitors can join a free niwaka-ren on the spot and dance with the crowd after a quick lesson — no experience needed.
- Mid-August is hot and humid even at night; bring water, a towel and some cash for street stalls.
