The Aomori Nebuta Festival is held every year from August 2 to 7. On the nights of August 2–6, giant illuminated nebuta floats parade through the city centre (the first two nights also include children’s floats), and on August 7 there is a daytime parade followed by fireworks and a sea parade of nebuta in the evening. Anyone wearing the haneto costume can join the dancers who leap alongside the floats.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- The daytime parade on August 7 lets you see the floats in detail with a more relaxed crowd than the night parades.
- Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE near Aomori Station displays full-size nebuta all year, so you can see them up close before or after the festival.
- Book a paid seat along the parade route on one of the night parades for a guaranteed view without fighting for curb space.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.4× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- Hotels in Aomori often fill up a year ahead — consider staying in Hirosaki or Hachinohe and travelling in by train.
- Haneto costumes can be rented or bought in the city; follow the rules on dress and conduct if you join the dancing.
- Check the official site for each night’s parade times, the route and the August 7 fireworks schedule.
