The Akita Kanto Festival is usually held August 3–6; the 2027 dates have not been posted yet. Each evening on Kanto-odori avenue, performers balance long bamboo poles hung with dozens of lanterns on their palms, foreheads, shoulders and hips, in a show that typically runs from around 19:00 to 20:30. By day, teams compete in technique contests (hiru-zuma) at Area Nakaichi.
Calmer ways to enjoy it
- The daytime hiru-zuma competitions at Area Nakaichi let you watch the balancing skills up close with a much smaller crowd.
- Book a paid seat along Kanto-odori for the night performance so you don’t need to stake out a spot hours in advance.
- Outside festival days, the Neburi Nagashi Kan folk performance centre in Akita city displays kanto poles and lets you get a feel for them.
Crowd impact
Expect around 2.0× the usual crowds near the main venue while the festival runs. This is an estimate, not a live count.
Practical tips
- After the night performance, audiences often get a chance to touch or try lifting a kanto — stay near the avenue when the show ends.
- Kanto-odori is within walking distance of Akita Station; book accommodation early, as the city fills up during the festival.
- Confirm the 2027 dates and paid-seat sales on the official site once they are posted.
