Eating out in Tokyo: small things that help
Carry some cash
Cards and IC cards are widely accepted, but small shops, stalls and older places may be cash only. Keep a few thousand yen in notes and coins.
Ticket machines (shokken-ki)
Many ramen and noodle shops sell meal tickets from a machine by the door: buy the ticket first, then hand it to the staff. Some machines take only cash, so have ¥1,000 notes ready.
Queue etiquette
Line up where the staff or signs show, with your whole group present — saving spots for friends is frowned upon. Don't block neighboring shops or the pavement, and be ready to order when you sit down.
Go off-peak
Lunch around 12:00–13:00 is the busiest time. Arriving at opening or after 14:00 usually means a shorter wait. Markets and some shops close early in the afternoon.
Small manners
Some shopping streets ask visitors not to eat while walking: eat by the stall or in the space provided, and keep your trash until you find a bin. Tipping isn't expected.
How places were chosen
A place is on this list only if I could confirm it on the source itself: the MICHELIN Guide Tokyo, a Tabelog Hyakumeiten list, or Tokyo's official tourism site GO TOKYO. The year shown is the edition of that list. Ratings and review text are not copied. The budget is a rough band per person for a typical meal; markets, streets and food halls are marked "any budget". Last checked October 11, 2026.
