Himeji, Hyogo
Enjoy it without the crush
- The eve on Oct 14 (yoimiya) at Matsubara Hachiman Shrine is noticeably calmer than the main day while still showing off the yatai floats
- On the morning of Oct 15, watch the yatai make their way through the village streets near Shirahama-no-miya Station before the crowds move to the Otabisho
- At the Otabisho, stay toward the upper edge or sides of the hillside rather than the packed front rows — you still see the clashes and can leave easily

Kawagoe, Saitama
Enjoy it without the crush
- Come in the daytime of Saturday Oct 17, when floats move through town with far fewer people than during the evening hikkawase
- Watch from side streets off the main Chuo-dori route, where floats pass between face-offs and you can step back easily
- Visit the Kawagoe Festival Museum, which displays real festival floats year-round, to see them up close without the crowds

Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)
Kyoto
Enjoy it without the crush
- Oike-dori is one of Kyoto’s widest avenues, so there is usually more room to stand than near the start at the Imperial Palace
- Watch the later stretch on Jingu-michi near Heian Shrine in mid-afternoon, after the lunchtime crowds at the start have thinned
- If you want a guaranteed view without jostling, book a paid seat at the palace, on Oike-dori or at Heian Shrine

Kurama Fire Festival
Kyoto (Kurama)
Enjoy it without the crush
- Arrive in Kurama in the mid-afternoon, well before 18:00, so you can find a place along the village street before the queues at the station build up
- The first hour, when small torches and then the big ones start appearing along the village street, is easier to watch than the late-night climax near the shrine
- If crowds worry you, see Kurama-dera and the village in daylight on another day and catch the torches only briefly on festival night

Karatsu, Saga
Enjoy it without the crush
- The town procession on Nov 4 is a working day for many and is generally calmer than the Nov 3 holiday, when the Otabisho hauling draws the biggest crowds
- For the Nov 2 Yoi-yama, watch the lanterns from a street further along the route rather than right outside Karatsu Shrine, where the parade starts
- Visit the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall (曳山展示場) on another day to see the floats up close without any crowd

Kyoto
Enjoy it without the crush
- Go on a weekday rather than a weekend, and consider early December, when the late-November peak crowds have passed
- Arrive toward the end of the entry window (closer to 20:30) instead of queuing for the 17:30 opening
- See the maples by day during the treasure exhibition, combined with a morning walk along the Philosopher’s Path or a visit to nearby Nanzen-ji

Chichibu, Saitama
Enjoy it without the crush
- During the daytime of Dec 3, the floats move through town in a much calmer atmosphere than the night climb
- The eve on Dec 2 gives you the festive streets and floats with far fewer people than the main night
- Watch the fireworks from Hitsujiyama Park on the hill above town rather than squeezing toward the Otabisho

Tokyo (Shibuya)
Enjoy it without the crush
- From January 4 onward, a weekday early morning visit is far calmer than the first three days.
- Hatsumode is traditionally made until around January 7, so going later in that week still counts.
- A small neighbourhood shrine near your hotel offers the same ritual with little or no queue.

Sapporo, Hokkaido
Enjoy it without the crush
- Walk Odori Park in the morning, when the sculptures are already on view but the evening light-up crowds have not arrived.
- The western blocks of Odori Park, farther from the TV Tower, usually feel less packed than the central area.
- The Tsudome site on a weekday daytime is spacious and good for children.
Every date was checked against the organizer's official page. "Date TBC" means this year's date hasn't been announced yet, so the usual timing is shown — check the official site before you go.
